The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Sola Adigun, has canvassed greater collaboration among teachers, parents and governments for the development of students and the education sector.
He urged teachers in the country to remain dedicated and strive to become impactful educators who positively influence the lives of their students.
The ASUSS national president spoke in Ado Ekiti on Thursday during an interactive multicast anchored by the Ekiti State Bureau of Community Communications.
Adigun, who described teachers as guardians and mentors who work in partnership with the government and parents to nurture students during school hours, appealed to parents to live up to their responsibilities by providing proper care, guidance and support for their children.
He said, “The students, on their part, should remain focused on their education, work hard to achieve their goals and shun cultism and other social vices.
“The shared responsibility of raising children is essential to addressing challenges in the education sector.”
The ASUSS president hailed the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for various intervention programmes in the education sector in the state.
Adigun, who said Oyebanji had contributed to the development of the education sector, commended the administration’s interventions in the areas of teachers’ welfare, infrastructure, regular payment of salaries and students’ welfare.
He hailed the Oyebanji government for increasing the amount available to workers under the car and housing loan scheme, describing the initiative as a significant step towards improving the welfare of teachers.
He said, “The provision of buses to convey teachers and students to various schools in Ekiti State, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy, has also provided significant relief to the workers. The transportation service has been provided free of charge.”
The ASUSS president, who said, however, that there was room for improvement, called for further government intervention in some areas, stressing, “There is the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers to enhance their professional capacity and improve the quality of education.”
Adigun also called for “continuity of improved payment of leave bonuses to teachers and other workers. This will complement the achievements recorded so far and ensure better welfare and working conditions for teachers in the state.”
